When Nerds Travel 2015

A year of traveling with big nerdy glasses on.

The nerdy universe is a vast, ever-expanding, eclectic combination of fandom, comic-cons, flat-out nerdy places and spectacular events. This past year did not disappoint. Come with us as we revisit our trek through a small slice of this nerdy universe.

January

Nerds Travel Wizarding World

January was a perfect time to visit the wonderful Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. Stunningly nerdy. Since Cape Canaveral is just a little over an hour away, we always head to the Kennedy Space Center. The perfect mash-up — Wands in Space!

March

Stan Lee at Emerald City Comicon

Every year, Emerald City Comicon in Seattle, WA, welcomes a fleet of comic-con travelers with open arms. Even though it grows every year, it has maintained a comforting intimate feel.

Pi Day, March 14 (3.14)

May

May 4th Minnesota Twins

May turned out to be a trip-packed month. For us it begins with May 4 (ahem, "May the 4th be with You"). Phoenix Comicon came next with a Wayward Nerd panel. Towel Day (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Day), MSP Comicon, and the CONsole Room managed to squeeze in.

NERD HOLIDAY

Star Wars Day, May 4

Towel Day, May 25

July

SDCC

There is only one ultimate comic-con. Some say, it started it all. Either way, San Diego Comic-Con International was THE place to be in July. So much to see, so many panels, tons of previews. The flip side of the frenzied, nerd overload of SDCC, was the small science fiction and fantasy event called CONvergence

September

HawaiiCon

HawaiiCon is vacation within a comic-con. Imagine a luau with the TARDIS dropping in. The scenery is breathtaking and the panels diverse. Rose City Comic Con is a comic-con gem and always at the top of our list. Wonderful panelists from Portland's comic-book community. But nobody brings the epic cosplay like Dragon Con 2015

November

runDisney

A half marathon on a perfect November morning through Disneyland certainly will get your motor running. In 2015, runDisney Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon was draped with Disney magic and superhero fun.

February

Gallifrey One TARDIS

If it's February then it must be Gallifrey One in Los Angeles. It's all things Doctor Who — very wibbly wobbly, timey wimey. San Diego Comic Fest continues the back-in-time theme by creating a perfect 80s throwback convention. Not as big as San Diego Comic-Con but founded on the same principle.

April

Star Wars Celebration

April started out with comics and pop-culture at WonderCon Anaheim. A great way to lead into Star Wars Celebration. 2015 was a spectacular, nerd-out, bonanza. JJ Abrams introduced us to BB-8, the Awakens cast, beloved Star Wars family, and even a peek at the upcoming movie.

NERD HOLIDAY

International Tabletop Day

June

E3

Summer heated up with a trip inside the industry-only trade show, E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo). Lego's mash-up game Dimensions was front and center along with Star Wars characters for Infinity. HeroesCon was packed with comic book heroes —writers, artists! Fun at a super level!

August

D23 Expo

Captain Kirk in Las Vegas, a Disney Fan Expo in Anaheim, and Supernatural in Minneapolis. The Star Trek 2015 Convention brought nearly every major cast member from the TV series together on one stage. Seeing a replica of the bridge — mind blowing. D23 EXPO (Disney fan convention) was epic (George Lucas, Stan Lee, Bob Iger). A Salute to Supernatural with Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles was most definitely — supernatural.

October

Stan Lee's Comikaze

Halloween and Stan Lee's Comikaze go hand in hand. In 2015, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, added eerie fun. Stan Lee himself, along with celebrity interviews, panels, cosplay, and costume all made this place the superhero place to be. FallCON in Saint Paul and NerdCon: Stories in Minneapolis rounded out the month with great local flair.

December

Phoenix Comicon

Phoenix Comicon Fan Fest started out the month on a festive note. Little more than two weeks later, Star Wars: A Force Awakens premiered. Wayward Nerd attended the movie opening among snowtroppers and palm trees at Disney World in Orlando. A perfect end to a well-traveled year in the nerdy universe.
