Time Traveling to Gallifrey One: 2020 Edition

Even if you don’t arrive in a T.A.R.D.I.S. Wayward Nerd has a few tips to making your Gallifrey One time great.

By MJ Wilke

Doctor Who fans (affectionately Whovians) amass at the annual convention, Gallifrey One, Feb.14-16, 2020 at the Marriott Los Angeles Airport Hotel. But as with many things, Whovians aren't bound by normal time, and this convention kicks off not on Friday, but, unofficially at 3 pm on Thursday, Feb. 13. Whether it's your first or 30th Gally1, here are some tips, reminders and suggestions to make this Gallifrey One — brilliant!

Print your confirmation.

Badge pick up is by name, with an ID, but, it is a good idea to bring with you a printed copy of your email confirmation. Gallifrey One does not use bar codes or physical tickets.

Manage your tech.

Download the schedule app and remember to pack a backup power supply.

Pack auction items.

The annual Bob May Memorial Charity Auction, occurring on Sunday, is looking for high quality donations. Pack a few treasures to donate.

Watch/Read/Listen.

Whether you plan to watch/read/listen as you pack, while traveling or at the con, it can enhance the immersive feel of Gallifrey One. Here are some suggestions featuring many of this year’s guests.

Watch.

The Witchfinders. A new era episode, the director, screenwriters, and several actors are guests.

Read.

Doctor Who: The Third Doctor miniseries comic books — writer Paul Cornell and artist Christopher Jones are both guests, as well as actress Katy Manning who plays Jo Grant. A great souvenir to have it signed by all three.

Behind the Sofa: Celebrity Memories of Doctor Who an ebook compilation benefiting Alzheimer's Research, several guests are contributors.

Listen.

Doctor Who – The 50th Anniversary Collection

Big Finish Audio plays.

Nerdy Places.

Add even more British feeling to the con or just pick up some Jammie Dodgers. Plan some extra time before or after the convention to explore British LA. For more information on these and other geekie hot spots in LA, check out our Nerdy Places.

Whimsic Alley – a gift shop great for last minute touches to your costume.

Ye Olde King’s Head  - restaurant and grocer serving high tea and you can find Jammie Dodgers here.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal Studios Hollywood – don’t miss having a butterbeer (or other) in Hog’s Head Pub.
