Books, Books, Everywhere Books

A Nerdy Places Feature: The Last Bookstore

By MJ Wilke

A huge wave of books overhead hits you immediately as you enter — it's a fitting piece of artwork to hang from above in a LA bookstore. It’s hard to not hear LeVar Burton’s (or as nerds know him, Geordi La Forge’s) voice in your head as you enter this large airy space:

“Take a look, it’s in a book” – Reading Rainbow

Books come alive at the Last Bookstore. Whimsical art pieces decorate almost every nook and cranny, some using books themselves to build a sculpture or objects associated with books, the act of reading or even the subject matter. Housed in the historic Spring Arts Tower, the building itself adds to the artwork and ambiance. Historic buildings and books just seem to go hand in hand.

Follow the swirling manuscript up the stairs to the mezzanine area. There you will find a labyrinth of books in the science fiction section culminating in a tunnel of books taking you to the horror section located in the old vault room.

Don’t overlook that this is first and foremost a bookstore. They have an excellently curated selection of new, used and rare books. And there are also stores within a store with the Dungeon Dungeon graphic novel section and gallery shops.
